This gown represents a continued exploration of short row scallop techniques and color possibilities after making my Scalloped Fringe Dress. Making more dramatic scallops eliminated the need for tuck stitches, and transitioning from large to small scallops up the dress created additional visual interest.
This dress was inspired by the desire to make a glamorous fantasy gown, that could also be a lingerie piece. The sheer fabric paints your skin in a watercolor gradation, while the coordinating wrap elevates the fantasy and is a visual and tactile treat for the senses.
Above you can see my process for designing this wrap, from getting ideas from my visual research and swatches, to initial prototypes, to the finished piece where you can see the various styling possibilities it holds. I never would have thought to pair together a thread weight metallic yarn with a fluffy eyelash yarn since they are on opposite ends of the spectrum, but when I did it created magic!
Another thing of note about this dress is the range of yarns that were used for it. Because I was using deadstock yarn that was donated to the university, my choices were very eclectic! This dress is made of various lightweight yarns including merino wool, viscose, cashmere, acrylic, polyester, and nylon! I hope that it inspires people to use the leftover materials they have in new and creative ways.
